While I'm at it.......I went to Venice in early March for a friends bachelor party......plan was for 2 days of tuna fishing but mother nature had different ideas. We did get out the first day and managed some nice fish......I managed a 55 lb wahoo early and then we didn't do too much.....the other boat of guys caught a 225 lbs mako shark and a bunch of king fish.....at the end of the day we picked up a small blackfin.......then, the other boat hooks another mako, we went over and made a rod pass from their boat to ours so the bachelor could fight the mako......I was the unlucky one who got to get on the bow and grab the rod with a 200 + lbs mako on the other end in 5-6 ft seas.......pretty crazy... that fish jumped about 25 ft off the side of the boat and broke the line.....but.....WOW!!
Day 2 was not going to let us get offshore, so we went to a rig in about 45 ft of water and both boats tied up next to each other.......we caught all kinds of stuff......pretty much all released, but, we managed to catch appr. 125 sheepshead, all around 5-7 lbs (no joke), assorted red snapper, pompano, spanish macks, trout, catfish, spadefish, redfish and probably some other stuff as well. We fished we Billy Wells and Mike Ellis.....Billy runs the Wild Bill and MIke runs Relentless sportfishing......good guys and Venice is an awesome place.
NOTE: I'm not a shark killer, I have much respect for them and do my best not to hurt them when caught as bycatch......however, this mako was taken to the dock and all of the meat was taken home by the 12 of us (Mako is delicious)......and more than that, a Vietnamese gentlemen almost peed his pants when we told him he could have all the fins....and the jaws were mounted by the angler.....so it was all used.
