was thinking of the following:

50# braid main line
4' of 80# mono leader
12" wire leader

trying to keep it simple enuff that I can also use the same rod and reel for a bottom rig also....

any input would be appreciated

load the reel up with 30-40lb mono tie in a bimini twist about 3' to double up the line test and be a shock absorber on the strike. Albright knot that to a short wire leader.

What are you trolling for? Braid is essential for trolling stretch 30's deeper than 40 feet. I disagree with BH completely about the braid. Braid will allow you to run shorter drops for trolling up grouper. That will allow you a better chance at double hookups and more maneuverability when making turns in the boat. All that bimini twist and albright stuff is not necessary for grouper/king trolling in our area. KISS is the best method.

You do not need wire in my opinion. 4 feet of 80# mono is all I use. Never been cut off by a king.

I also use 50# braid. I use the braid tied directly to a good shark leader. I used to use wire, but tried it with the leader and had the same results. The wire wouls chaff the braid after a while, the leader does not. Plus, the leader makes changing out a stretch a snap. I have ate a many grouper filets catching them this way.

I also have had almost no beakoffs with this setup. And a king will not bite thru the shark leader. About the only time I do break is when I get too close to a crab pot. I hate losing those 15 dollar lures....Of course, that gives Tom a treasure to look for when he is out spearfishing..

Essential, Really? come on Tom. To each there own I guess. I have a TLD25 I loaded up with braid to give it a try and all I got was pulled hooks when the Kings would slam it.

I gotta go with braid on this one also. I do most of my trolling in waters less than 25ft with lighter tackle ... 30- 65lb braid, tied with a blood knot to 50lb Mono leader. IF trolling deeper then you may want to bump up your leader strength to 80lb. I do not use a swivel as I feel it just grabs the grass.

I have braid on the combo that I won at the social and have trolled with it on two different trips now and have ripped the lips off of lord knows how many fish "with the drag set to barely not releasing" and caught one, a short that had it's mouth ripped and it's side split for 3 inches from the hook ripping through it I will either use it for bottom fishing or remove the braid from it!! I use 40# test tied directly to the lure and while I do loose a few lures, I also catch quite a few fish also I may try putting a leader on the braid and see if it reduces the harm being done to the fish, but so far I don't much care for it

If you are ripping hooks you have your drag set too tight. You may need to stick with the long pole.

You can drag 30's down to 65 foot plus on braid. You can never do that with mono.

Wevans, give the mono leader a shot. The leader serves two purposes 1) It works as a shock leader. I put about 4ft of mono on each of my set ups. 2) The mono is more resistant to bumping into rocks than the braid is. If you knick a rock with braid it's over with, the mono has far less memory.

I do alot of trolling for Grouper in shallow and have rarely lost a fish to hooks pulling/ripping out. This may have alot to do with the limber rods that I use which provide additional shock absorbtion.

There is a drag adjustment on the reel. Use it.

I use a loose drag, and it still pulls the grouper up out of the rocks. And if a big king hits it, the drag will be easy on the hooks....
