Horseshoe Beach 7-11

Post by GatorBaiter »

Went out of Horseshoe Beach Satuday for some flats action. We got there at sunrise and quickly netted some bait pins and finger mullet before heading out. Went out about three miles to 4-5 ft of water. The early bite was hot with four trout in the 16-18" range. Then it seemed like a school of little blacktips moved in and that was all that would hit. We moved around looking for some clear water - seemed like everything was tea colored with the overflow running out of Suwannee. Started drifting over some spotty bottom and caught our limit of catfish quickly :( ...and one 28" Spanish :). After that the tide was slack and the wind was flat. No action and it was hot so we decided to call it a day. We had just pulled in the rigs and dumped the bait when a whole school of baits moved in around us. Started to see something in the distance TEARING up the top and before we knew it they were on top of us. It was a mixed school of BIG Jacks, Black Drum, Tarpoon, and Codia (that we saw moving around the boat)! Threw a piece of cut bait and landed a 20lb plus Jack. Threw again and landed a 20 lb plus black drum. One more cast and one more 20lb plus drum. There was just no way to get the bait to the Cobia...and then they were gone. Called it a day and headed out in front of the storms. Next time I'll un-rig and dump the bait at the landing :) ! Would have had some great pictures but we went canoeing the Juniper Springs run on Friday and the camera decided to take a little "swim".

Thanks for the heads-up, GatorBaiter. 'Bout time the monsters showed up! Gonna be ready for 'em this weekend.
