how far by boat is it from the mouth of the econ to the Keaton area? i have been told around 10 miles or so. Also, is there anykind of marina facilities in Keaton to get gas, ice etc. if you went there by boat? just curious. have never been more than 4 miles or so east of Rock Island before. as always, thanks for any help.

From what I remember about 25 miles. It is a long haulif the seas aren't flat in a small boat.

If I'm not bad wrong it's 20+ miles or there about.
The marina at Keaton has gas, live bait, ice and frozen bait.

Volguy, if you want to fish Keaton it is best to drive there and put in. They have a great public ramp to the left right after you get there and there's a good lift at the marina if you don't want salt water on your trailer. The lift costs any where fropm $6-$8 when I've used it, depends on the length of the boat. Ramp costs $5.00 and they ask that you leave a float plan there. It's a great place to fish, right now it's got a lot of scallopers in the water but the gulf is a big place. Just give the swimmers a wide berth and you should be OK. Good luck and let us know how you do.

I would strongly suggest NOT going straight. There be a bunch of big rocks along that route.

Its easily over 25 miles, if you hug the coast. I would not recommend a fast run from Keaton and back. Besides, most of the scallops are being found south of Keaton.

I'm the GIS technician (mapper) for the Taylor County Property Appraiser's Office. I just measured it and it's almost exactly 25 miles. The Keaton boat ramp stays over-full this time of year, so you won't get a parking space unless you just luck up. Plus it's a mile from the ramp to the end of the canal, so expect to spend about 15-20 minutes idling out of the canal. The county has purchased the land to expand the Keaton parking lot, but construction hasn't even begun yet. There are a few public ramps between Econfina and Keaton, as long as your boat's not too big. Oh, and yes, you can fuel up at the Keaton Marina from the water.
