Anybody have any good/bad suggestions on installing a am/fm/cd radio in a boat? I was thinking about having one installed and didn't know what I really needed. I've looked a little and it seems you can buy a kit with the radio and speakers for $100 plus. Then maybe an antenna, and installation costs. Any help would be appreciated.

It's not really a difficult job if you have some basic tools and some patience. I can tell you that a 100 dollar system probably won't last you 2 years.

I bought one at Boater's world for around $200. Very easy to install. I bought the extended warranty and I've heard the warranty is a good investment.

I did this, about a year and a half ago and now the radio turns it self on and off when it wants too and half the time will not work when you want it to
Spend a little bit more money up front, so you dont have to replace one every year or so

Unless you enjoy fixing stuff, if you don't spend $400. to $500. for the stereo speakers and antenna, you probably won't be happy. If you have a center console or other open boat get a "black box stereo" where you have a small remote mounted outside and the main part mounted in a protected place. Forget about the CD player and get a unit you can plug your IPOD or MP3 player into. We've had good luck with the Black Box JBL and the High dollar Kenwoods.

It depends on the boat, where and how you mount it will effect the life of the radio. I would suggest at a weather proof housing of some sort and remove it when its not in use. I have a Jenson stereo and its held up well but its not exposed to the elements much. The speakers on my boat have weathered the most so a good marine speaker would be in order.
