Alligator Point

Alligator Point - July 25-30, 2009 / Most Excellent Vacation! - Sorry this post is 3 weeks old...I've had computer troubles. One year ago my family and I decided to rent a house for a week's vacation at Alligator Point. I fish Strippers in North Georgia in my 24-foot Sea Pro. I was excited, to say the least, about fishing the Gulf of Mexico in my boat. After doing some research and talking to quite few people, I finally came across this site. I contacted my new friend, Tom Keels, for information on fishing the Gulf. After some discussion, Tom agreed to take me fishing in my boat, to show me the ropes (Sat. July 25 -Tom, I cannot thank you enough). We fished the K Tower, Yamaha, Oar Reef and several other "secret" spots. The Saturday Tom took us out, we caught 5-7 Amberjack (just short) a 30 lb. and a 20 lb. Cobia. This set the stage for the rest of the week, for my two sons and I. We fished every day (while the women were at the beach). Tom showed us how to catch our bait on Dog Island Reef and how to catch fish. As well as, how to drive my boat in "flat" seas. We caught Amberjack every day except one; five more Cobia (2 keepers), some grouper (short) a few Red Snapper, some Pink Mouth, and a few Black Bass, one big King Fish, and one 3-foot shark.

I guess the biggest reason for this post is for all of you guys like me, who have often dreamed of doing something like this but just didn't know. Here's the deal- with some preparation, electronics, a little help from some friends, and lots of common sense (weather) this is acheive, a trip like this is easily obtainable. With a little nudge, I would even go back, and plan to every year until I can't. Maybe the highlight of my trip was when the 26-inch Amberjack I had on got eaten by a giant grouper. Tom called in right off; the fight only lasted a minute and then the giant fish spit my fish out. I talked to a diver the next day at the K-Tower who saw several goliath grouper while diving, between 150 and 400 lbs.

Tom, thanks again for educating me.
