Alligator Point 10-4 & 10-5

I was on the water Saturday and Sunday with fair to good results.
Sat: After loading up with a livewell full of pinfish on D.I. Reef, we headed to 50 ft to see if the grouper were biting. The fish were there and they were biting but due to some inexperience and a very strong current flow, the crew was only able to put a couple of keepers in the bopx. The grouper seemed to be sticking tight to the bottom and kept "rocking up" the anglers. I think I went through 10-12 leader rigs on the first spot, due to break-offs. After moving on, we checked out a couple of spots in 60 ft, marking fish but the bite had slowed. We did some trolling on our way back to 50 ft and picked up 4 grouper(1 keeper) using the gordon and chartruese stretch 30's. Still a little too much grass as we had to pull them in several times to clear the lures. On the last stop of the day back in 52 ft, we had an afternoon bite that produced a couple more keepers, but then it was time to head back. The water was about 78 and clearing up and the seas were 2-3 laying down nice in the afternoon. Back at the dock, the tally was 6 keepers, some key west grunts and 2 empty leader keepers. Not the best day, but everybody had a good time.
Sun: Had some clients from Georgia come in for some fishing along with a couple of friends, Marc and his Dad, Bob helping out. Decided to head out to 100 ft to see if we could have some better results as well as get some snapper before the season closes. Loaded up with live bait once again and made the 1.5 hour run. At the first hole, the bite was steady all morning. The very choppy 3 ft seas made it a little challenging but the crew was putting some grouper and snapper in the box so all were having a good time. After lunch we checked out another spot with some more success before deciding to make our way back in. Stopped off in 50 ft area to see if we could put a few more in the box but they weren't biting and the crew was ready to call it a day after a morning of non stop action. Conditions were about the same as Sat except the water clarity is better the further out you go. Back at the dock the tally was 12 grouper(red and gag), and 11 snapper(red and lane) and they threw back at least twice that many shorts, which was a little surprising. I had expected to have some bigger fish out there.
The fish are biting and expect it to only get better all through October. Get out there and get'em.

We fished off of Alligator Point Saturday in 50' and caught only 2 keeper red grouper. Lots of grunts in the area. However, we did see a lot of mullet back in the harbor so it looks like the prime fall season is nearly upon us.

Question

Capt Jay, I have a couple of questions for you please, I fish farther east than you ( from Econfina area ) and i was thinking of tralioring up to Alligator pt. before snapper season ends, How far a run of it is it to 100 ft and is there lots of good bottom to find for snapper there or do i need a few numbers before i go ? thanks for any help... frank

I think I can answer some of those questions Frank.
First if you are going to trailer, go to Carrabelle. From the mouth of the river it is about 28 miles to 100 feet of water. 100 feet starts about 4-5 miles North of the S-tower. There is lots of good bottom all around the towers. But nearly all of it is the infamous "swiss cheese" bottom that we have heard about. Its nearly all flat and hard. Its very easy to find with a color bottom machine, but can be done with a high power b/w machine with good resolution.

Snapper normally show as clutter off the bottom between 5 and 35 feet. Sometimes they are in an inverted "V" shape, or as some folks call it, a christmas tree. The day I fished with Jay, if you dropped to the bottom you got a grouper, but if you reeled up about 15 feet, you got a snapper. Live cigar minnows are best, but a frozen one on a small 1/0 or 2/0 circle hook will get them too.

Always keep a live bait on a flat line out there because you never know when a dolphin or big king may show up.

Thanks for the help, if we do decide to tralior that sounds like the best bet. Maybe we can try it before snapper season closes, if we do i'll let you know how we did... thanks again... frank

Frank,
Tom nailed it for you. If you come out of East Pass (Carrabelle), you can stop by O-Tower and load up on some live cigar minnows. Alligator Point does not have a ramp worth your time and it is a further run to the S-Tower area. If you catch a good day, you can even drift awhile with some bait just off the bottom while you watch your bottom machine and you will likely find some snapper. Once you find a spot or get some hits, anchor up on it and you will most likely find some grouper with them. Good Luck!

Tom,
I did use my new tool! Thanks. We released quite a few shorts and only had one not make it back to the bottom. We didn't see any Dolphin this time:) We had the flat line out the whole time we were anchored and had one undersized cobia swim by but he didn't take the bait. We just didn't have the Dophinmaster on board! Take care.
Capt. Jay
