Really wanted to snag some nearshore grouper this fall, but stars didn't align for a perfectly timed trip which brings me to questions about winter grouper fishing.

Do they stay shallow through December and January? If so, just as shallow as in late fall or back out into a little deeper water? Do they keep hitting trolled stretches or require bait fished more slowly?

Too few trips this year and for the first time in years have let the freezer get empty so any feedback will be much appreciated!

I would think they're shallow because of the water temp, so the colder the better. I know they spawn deep, but I'm not sure what time of year.

You can catch them trolling through Dec and into Jan. When the water temp is consistently in the low 50s then you have to force feed them. Seems like everything this year is about 2-3 weeks behind schedule.

BTW, the fish don't move. They are in the same places all year. They just change their feeding habits.

That pig in my avatar was caught in Jan, last year by Celeste and we slammed them that day, not to mention my father and daughter getting into the action that month with me! Look up my posts from last Jan!

Wife's biggest Gag, Mid Jan (30 Degrees that morning, dead bait)...
Daughters first trolled Grouper...

Dang, Ranaman, posting pics like that the first day of the work week just ain't right...

Joking aside, MUCH appreciate you sharing the info/pics. I'm not a big fan of running around WOT in the cold weather, but those pics have me SERIOUSLY weighing another trip out soon!

Guys I have been hearing more and more that the water temp is the key. I was told, and would like to hear from the experts on BBF that below 54 degrees the inshore grouper move back out into deeper water. When I say "inshore" I mean 25ft deep or less. Anyone comment on the temp theory?
