Hello all,
I am a total newbie and originally from Nebraska so keep that in mind.
A buddy and I went out near the Lighthouse yesterday and were hoping for some trout. We had some motor probs so had to stay close to the Lighthouse Besides numerous pinfish looking things, we also ended up hooking an eelish looking creature with a long snout and lots of sharp teeth. Could this have been a gar? If it were a gar would you eat one? Getting the hook out of his mouth was a lot of fun. We did get a trout but he was only 14 inches so we threw him back. Hopefullly we can get our motor fixed soon to get out to deeper waters. Thanks for your kindness to a Husker.

It could have been a houndfish

or a Needlefish

Or a gar

Gar are good eating. Not sure on the other two. Judging by the size you said, I would lean towards a needlefish.

I've caught a couple of decent gar (>36") on the flats, which surprised me the first time because I had never caught one in salt water. They are pretty tasty, but kinda bony and I generally don't spend the time to mess with cleaning them.
