I fished the Rocky's tournament Saturday with Seth. We put in just before daylight at Dark Island (stupid stupid stupid
) with a super low tide. Had to use the trolling motor, until it got too shallow for that. Then we paddled/drug the boat out the rest of the way (yes that was us you saw as you were leaving the Keaton canal on plane like an intelligent person). Finaly got out into deep enough water to run the motor about an hour after the sun came up
. We headed south to clearer water.
I stopped on the way to "the spot" because I saw lots of fish in the water. Couldn't tell what they were because of the chop, but decided to give it a shot. Fished for a few minutes with no luck, then I heard Seth say "Holy crap man, check out this redfish!". About the time I said "Huh?", I heard his drag start screaming. As the fish got closer to the boat, we realized how big it actually was, then I said it, "I hope he's legal!", not realizing that I had just jinxed my buddy to the most extreme degree. Got the fish in the boat, seth held the head on the tape while I took the reading. "Sorry buddy, 27 1/2"." No matter how close he held the red's nose to the top of the tape, the tail still reached past the 27" mark.
We picked up a couple of keeper trout in that area, then ran north. We picked up 7 more, making it one short of a 2-man limit. 9 trout in 9 hours. Slow. They ranged from 15"-18", nothing worth weighing but certainly worth frying up
! I hear that most people struck out this weekend, so I guess I'm proud we caught something.
We were catching them on subsurface walk-the-dog baits and Gulp shrimp and jerk shad. We threw several other lures, but they didn't seem to want anything else we had to offer. Mostly in 5-6' of water.
