Great Re-opening Day -- Carrabelle 4-1-10

The forcast looked to good for work, so I agreed to meet groupertherapy and a few friends in Carrabelle to do some offshore fishing. I got to Carrabelle around 7:00am to find nice flat seas and alot of boats already launching. Imagine that  The rest of the crew showed up around 7:45 and we were off in no time. After a minor mechanical delay, we finally got out.

I decided to go try a spot not fished since 2 summers ago. It's known for its abundance of rock bass and boy were they there  As soon as a bait went down, it was fish on  When one was pulled to the surface, there was 4-5 following it up. It was a frenzy. I used the light tackle on this spot in 45 ft. and had a blast. After 30 minutes of non-stop catching, we decided to leave them biting for bigger fish.

We headed out to 75 ft. and marked a spot not fished in many moons. Good bottom and lots of fish. The bite didn't start with a bang, but we did manage 2 nice gags after 15-20 minutes. The grouper didn't bite agressively, but they were there. So, we decided to wait them out. We fished the spot over the next 4 hours and caught 6 more gags (all between 25"-30"), 5 nice red snapper, and few grunts and a nice 5-6 ft. tigershark :o Luckily, he got off at the surface. We even had a few breakoffs, one due to the ladder on the transom  The grouper were fat very healthy looking. Same for the snapper. We decided to call it a day around 4:00pm and headed on back.

Got back to the ramp just ahead of the regata. We even had the pleasure of being thouroughly checked by FWC at the ramp :-? Everything was in order and the ocifer told us that we had the nicest catch seen so far  All the other boats had managed just shorts so we had to show them what keepers looked like  All in all, a great day on the water. Couldn't have asked for better weather

Thanks for the great day Bill  Let's do it again soon. Maybe some pics to follow.....
