Squid info

So during the May NFGFC tournament I caught an 18 inch trout that spit up a very small squid. I don't know a lot about squid and wanted to see what some of you thought about it. Have you either found squid in a trout's belly or had one throw it up? I was under the impression that squid hung out in much deeper water. We were on the west flats out of St. Marks. Could these 18 inch trout be traveling out deeper or are these squid moving in close...? And this would have been a fresh kill and by the looks it was not someone's purchased squid bait...
