My stone crabbing buddy Ben took my brother and me fishing on Saturday, along with our respective wive's/girlfriends. We anchored on some natural bottom in about 45 feet of water and fished with live pinfish.
I had a huge hit early on, but got broken off
. My brother's wife, LaDonna managed to catch her first and second ever keeper grouper before anyone else got anything into the boat. My girlfriend, Laurel followed with her first ever keeper grouper. I got another huge hit and broke off again
. Ben's wife, Vanessa hooked up with a nice one a little bit later. When she got it in the boat, it was a NICE 11 pound red grouper, but the real surprise came when Ben went to pull the hook out.
"Dang man, this one's got 3 pinfish in his mouth." Along with Vanessa's hooked pinfish, were the two that I had lost earlier (I was the only one using braid, and I was the only one using silver hooks instead of red). Never have I ever seen a fish with 2 hooks in it's mouth, with the baitfish still attached, go after another bait.
Of course I was ridiculed the whole way home. Heck, we all were. Our ladies had outfished us. Not a one of the guys managed a keeper grouper.
I got the double dose because a girl had managed to land the grouper that I lost twice.
We trolled to another spot with no luck. We anchored up there and caught several short grouper. No more keepers. We went home with 3 gags, one big red and lots of grunts and blackfish. All in all, it was a good day. We stopped at 9 mile sandbar on the way in and went for a swim. It was fun, although I didn't get my monster grouper. Next time we're leaving the girls at home.
