Read on the Pensacola forum that it's getting close to shore over that way and Ala. Some captains are saying oil on shore very soon.

I heard a rumor that some fishermen outta Apalach. was fishing 40 miles out and had oil on their lines and bait when they brought em up, didn't see any oil on the surface though

I haven't heard anything to support the statements below. Had a buddy run his 28 Contender 40 miles out of IP last weekend and another run his 30 ProSport out of Pensicola. Both caught nice wahoo and groupers, no sign of oil.

Cool stuff to watch. They are using the robots to saw the pipe...

They've dropped it twice and had it bind up twice. It's so compelling I can't stop watching.

I've been offshore and out of commision all weekend and haven't seen any news or been on the web. What are they trying now? I heard something about trying to cut a pipe?

Nevermind, I just read all about it. Why didn't they try this to start with?

Not to be a smart arse or anything but if they had thought the other stuff wouldn't have worked they propably would have. You know that Edison quote, "I know of a 100 ways not to build a light bulb" or something along those lines.

The approach to trying to stop the flow has been done in a systematic way. The latest proposal (cutting the pipe/containment) had risks that were earlier deemed more serious than the other actions taken thus far (early on when they were looking at options, the cutting of the pipe was deemed very serious because they were unsure where the flow was constricted. Now that they have a better idea of where the flow is restricted, there is greater confidence of being able to conduct the procedure being implemented this week without too much more impact). They did not want to stop moving forward with the other options while trying to determine if this option would be viable.

Even if the cutting/containment is successful, it will not guarantee a 100% recovery rate. The Top Kill was proposed to for the most part stop the flow close to the source. If the cutting/containment actions are successful, there will be about a miles worth of riser pipes to direct the oil to the surface. These pipes raise various concerns in their own right: breakage/hurricanes that stopping the flow near the source didn't raise.

The only thing that has been proven to work in this type of spill is the implementation of relief wells. As we all know, these wells may not be completed until August. However, as stated before, there is a team of drillers working their behinds off trying to get those wells completed ahead of schedule.

Systematic and methodical steps are being taken to try and wrestle this beast to the ground. To put it in our language: these are unchartered waters and we need to make sure we try and not make the situation any worse than it is, all the while getting the end result we want. Think of this analogy: it's your first time out at St. Marks and you want to get ahead of the other thousand boats on opening day of scallop season. You want to get your limit, but you don't want to bust your foot off by hitting an unseen rock over near the rock garden. In turn, you go slow and put an observer up front.
