What Year Is It? (Pictures posted)

My son has a 35 hp Evenrude motor. It is a 1979 or 1980 we think. It is an electric start, tiller steer, long shaft motor. The carry handle where the data plate is attached has been replaced so the data is not for that motor, so he can't tell what year it is. The cover has been repainted also. This makes it hard to order parts or do tune ups. We've tried the following: Checked breather on carb for numbers. Checked freeze plugs on engine for Model number or part numbers, tried to cross reference other stamped numbers on various other parts for year. Nothing has revealed a specific year or model number. One hint is, it has the shifter on the front of the motor. Anyone have any other ideas?

Take multiple photos from various angles both with and without the cover on. Send them to OMC. Someone there should be able to tell you what you have.

OMC has been gone for at least 6 years, FF. Evinrude is now built by Bombardier and Johnson has gone the way of Oldsmobile and Mercury.

Chuck Shields or Dennis at Shields Marina in St. Marks might be able to help. Or maybe Wavel Porter?

He knows those motors inside out.

Bring it to the meeting and let Wavel take a look at it...if he can't identify it, we'll raffle it off :-D

That's all I've owned for the last twenty-five years.

Sorry Silverking, Some habits die hard. I know OMC is Bombadier now. Just a slip of the mind. It happens when we get ancient. They should still have some idea as to what it is and how old.

I DO NOT KNOW OF ANY OMC ENGINES THAT HAD THE GEAR SHIFT ON THE FRONT OF THE COWLING. I HAVE OWNED ABOUT 30 OMC ENGINES AND ALL OF THE OLD ONES HAD THE GEAR SHIFTER ON THE SIDE OF THE COWLING. THE TILLER MODELS THAT I HAVE HAD THE SHIFTER IS IN THE HANDLE AS WELL AS THE THROTTLE, IT WAS A 35 HP EVINRUDE FROM 1955, I SOLD THAT ENGINE TO A FRIEND OF MINE DOWN IN ARCADIA BACK IN 1965 AND HE IS STILL USING IT DOWN IN PEACE RIVER AND PUNTA GORDA.

No. The shifter is in the center of the motor, not the side. Plus it's much older than the one in the picture. About a 1979-80. Can't take a picture right now. It's at my sons house about 40 mile away.

Got me, I don't recall any rudes with the shifter in the middle of the motor either.

These are pictures of my son's 35hp. The paint is not original, and the 20 on the front plate has been changed. It's a 35hp.
