Gotta do what I gotta do UPDATE

My little 25hp Yammi blew a head gasket. I was told by the fixit shop (no names need be mentioned on a public forum) that the motor was not worth repairing. After some research into new and used replacements, I have decided to do the repairs myself. $4000+

for a new and $1000 to $2000 for a good used motor

is a little out of my price range. I am an auto mechanic with thousands of dollars worth of tools. I have the repair manuals at my disposal. There should be no reason that I am not able to do the repairs myself

. By the way I am needing to rebuild the lower unit also. I can use all the moral support you guys can give. I will let you know how it goes. I hope I get it done quickly as I am afraid of the Redfish withdrawals I am sure to suffer.

I am heading south tomorrow (6/19/10) to get a new 25 two stroke attached to my boat. I might have to leave it there until next Saturday. I hope and pray that I will be able to bring it back tomorrow. I really, really want to get back on the water.

I called Porter's Marine to inquire about having the lower unit rebuilt. The very nice young lady that answered the phone politely explained to me that they are very busy this time of year and only do rebuilds in the winter.

I've changed many head gaskets in small Evinrude and Johnson motors. Very simple on OMC products. Only special tools you might need is a set of metric sockets and a torque wrench. It's very important to get the right torque on the head bolts. Cost about $20 at the auto parts store. Head gasket should be less than $40. The last one I bought for a 35hp Evinrude was $17.00. Napa also can order outboard motor parts, most of the time cheaper than boat place. I've found it cheaper most of the time to buy a used lower unit, than to try to rebuild one. Rebuild is a major operation for an amateur mechanic.

CS, if I don't have a set of metric wrenches and a torque wrench in my tool box I am gonna sue the Snapon man for the 20+thousand dollars I have spent on tools over the past years. On another note. I tore down the power head today. I am glad I decided to take it down completely. The crank bearings need to be replaced. Apparently there has been some water seepage for quite some time and the bearings have a fair amount of rust on them. I am going to order a complete power head repair kit Monday. I will also order the bearings I need. After I get the power head rebuilt I am going to tackle the lower unit. It does look repairable.

Yes, I'd sue also FF. Guess I missed the part about you being an Auto Mechanic the first read.

In that case when do you want to start the carb rebuild on my 35hp Evinrude.

Well folks. It seems the guys at the fixit shop I took it to originally were correct. It seems there was a problem with the water pump that allowed the engine to overheat repeatedly. This went unnoticed because the temperature alarm had been removed.(Done by a previous owner) All of this allowed the head gasket to seep water into the engine. Pistons were damaged. Rods were rusted. Cylinder walls were scored. Crank shaft was rusted. A new power head from Yamaha would cost over $1500. Then there is the problem with the lower unit. It seems there will be no repairs for the abused little motor. I will be getting a new one installed next weekend. I will be picking the boat up on the 26th and hopefully fishing on the 27th.
Thanks for all the encouragement,
FF

What year is the old Yamaha and what are you gonna do with all the pieces?

I dropped off my boat today. I drove 6 1/2 hours south and met with a nice guy who is in charge of the service department. I know it sounds nuts to drive so far for an outboard. It was the only place I could find that had a new 25 two stroke at a reasonable price. (well reasonable-ish) There will be a 10 hour break in period at 25:1 oil mix. I am hoping to be on the water next Sunday!!
The fish only have one more week to relax.
