My 1st, but not last, Econfina Trip

Post by aeiou1 »

Headed out WAY before sun-up last Saturday (6-5-10) for some inshore fishing at Econfina. We were the second boat to launch at the ramp and got on the water just as the sun was rising. I went out with a friend on his boat, and we had two other friends on another boat and figured we would brave the choppy/windy weather to catch some fish. I wish this report could have ended up like a couple others I have seen that were fishing that day, but I personally did not catch a thing! The other boat we were with ended up with 3 keeper trout on the day, but 3 fish between 4 guys over 7 or so hours was not what I had envisioned. But I still think I am plagued by the "New Fisherman's Bad Luck Initiation Phase" as I mentioned in my other post. We headed over towards rock island, but then came back to fish directly in front of the Econfina. I know they were using cajun thunder with gulp, and although I was using the same as well as at times gold spoons, pearl white gulp, etc, I never got a bite on the day. I think our limiting factor was not being able to get to that deeper range of 6' and deeper due to motor issues. I am not discouraged from trying Econfina again though as I have seen some very positive results, and will def try the live pinfish next time!!

Go back and try the deeper water, it's so hot now most of the fish are going deeper. Too bad about the motor issues, hope he got them worked out.

When it's that rough I dont use a cork. Heck cant see it most of the time. You got to pay your dues and it will get better. Daniel who fished with me sat did not catch a single keeper all last year. But he would catch dozens of shorts. I fished for years at St Marks and would get three on a good day. You see how long it took me to get a red. :smt011 But I do better at Ecofina and Keaton. :-D
