Saint marks Sunday 7/18/10

Well it started out as a great morning for me and my neighbor, Brian. We begin by heading east to Palmetto Island. I have been wanting to fish one of the creeks behind the island for some time now. It has been about a year since I have been there and it produced some nice catches for me. There is no good reason that I have not been back sooner. Just one of those things. Anyway, we struck out. We worked topwaters as well as anyone I have ever seen, with no results. My neighbor had a fish of some kind( we agreed that it looked like a bluefish) leap out of the water and come crashing down at his plug, but missed. During this Brian has some trouble with his 2nd reel. It seems there is not nearly as much line on it as the guy told him was put on. After a wind knot about 30 yards out caused him to cut and retie we found out the rig was unusable. I loaned him one of my stradics and it was back to business. We pick up and move to the surefire Redfish spot. As we are working toward the honey hole Brian caught a wind knot in the stradic. This one was only about 30 feet out and a cut and retie was not going to adversely affect anything. I was trying to hold position with the trolling moter so my neighbor would have a good shot at a Red if it were home. During all this I decide to take a cast slightly away from the target spot and, WHAM, a very strong Redfish grabs my spoon. This guy makes it to a sandy spot and hunkers down. As I gain a few feet on him he rips the drag and makes it back to the same spot and starts thrashing wildly. This goes back and forth for a while until Redzilla starts to tire. Up to this point both of us are certain it is a Red, but neither of us has been able to get enough of a look to see how big he is. He makes a big arc into the sun then under the boat. As he comes alongside I get my first good look at him. It is a beautifully marked and colored 24" Redfish. In the net and in the cooler he goes.
We work at finding another Red at that and two other spots for over an hour with no luck. I am really trying to put Brian on a Red. We decide to move into deeper water in search of Trout. Now it is Brian's turn to show me how it it done. He quickly puts 3 Keepers in the boat from 15 to 18 inches, to my none. Finally it is late enough we need to get back to town.
After stopping to ask some fellow anglers how their luck was, we found out we were on an assistance mission. Come to find out the folks we were exchanging fishing info with had a dead battery. After we got them on their way we headed home.
Another successful trip and a beautiful day.
Sorry no pics. I forgot the camera, but you all know what a Trout and Red look like by now.
