GAR on the FLY!!!

After seeing a few posts on FB, I started doing some research and thought I would give it a shot! Kim is not a early bird when it comes to fishing and just wants get some sun and read a book, so I was thinking this would give me some fly time and target practice to boot! Today was perfect weather for sight fishing GAR. Sunny and hot!!! Went 2 out of 3 on the little guys and had a bunch of slobs follow my "rope" fly, but no takers. I also yanked a couple of short strikes out of their mouth (if you can call it a mouth).......

Did you catch them on a rope fly- their teeth just get tangled up in the frayed rope right- No hook right?

Yep!!! My first attempt was with one that wasn't weighted and they would follow it but it ran too shallow. I changed over to one that I tied on a #2 Saltwater hook (cut the hook at the bend) with some weight and that was much better. Got it down where they were schooling. It's a blast to spot'm and watch'm take that "fly". Going again tomorrow!!!

Tim,
You might also try some 'cuda needlefish flies. If they're hitting the ones with the hook shank, they might also be tempted by those.

Sounds like a good diversion when you can't get out "real" fishing.
