Garmin 440s
Just picked up a new to me 440s and would like to make sure it has the latest updates. I also would like to transfer my waypoints from my computer (I downloaded them from my portable 176c to the computer) to the 440s. However, unless I am wrong, I don't see a data cable from Garmin.
How does one go about getting this done?

Re: Garmin 440s
Think it has a slot for an SD card....you have to power the unit and write to the card for Mapsource to be able to read it. Once you do that it is as simple as plugging in the card into your PC and using Mapsource to transfer the data.

So I need to buy a blank card, then also purchase a device to insert the blank card in to, and then hook it to my computer? Download my #'s on to the card, then insert said card in to gps?Chalk wrote:Think it has a slot for an SD card....you have to power the unit and write to the card for Mapsource to be able to read it. Yes, there is a place on front of machine for a card to go in to.

yes....the cards are pretty cheap....if your computer doesn't have a slot to read it...a universal usb reader is pretty cheap too. You have to fire up the GPS with the card in it and then there should be a function to write to the SD card. This allows Mapsource to recognize it as a GPS card.

Re: Garmin 440s
That would be nice except Garmin requires you to purchase software that transfers the info to your SD card then it will be able to load your waypoints to your 440s. My 440s works very well. I am, however, not real happy with the transom mounted transducer. No matter what i do I cannot get it to read depth while underway if I am going over 15-18 mph. I think I will need to go to the through hull type.

Re: Garmin 440s
You don't have to buy anything - well you do have to have mapsource but it is free....I have done this several times on various Garmin units to include a 440...blank SD card from walmart and stick it in. Page 38 in the OEM manual - http://www8.garmin.com/manuals/3291_OwnersManual.pdf
Page 37 is where you write to the SD card...this is important or the card will not be recognized by mapsource

Machine didn't come w/a transducer, so I'm leaving the old bottom machine in place.
Thanks Chalk, I'll pick up a blank card from WalMart. Do they have the usb adapter as well?

Re: Garmin 440s
Didn't realize a SD card was a digital camera card, and the reader was one of the 5 my wife has around here (shetakes a lot of pictures
). I was looking for a specific "Garmin" type of product. Anyway just got back from Wally world with a new SD card. Updating Mapsource now, hope to have this completed tonite, seeing how I postponed cutting the grass for this project.
