Galantnole, good thing you never had to spend time with ol' Chesty and his ilk... speaking from personal experience, they greatly enjoy banging on metal trash can lids around 3 am in the morning.

Semper Fi and good day to you all.
A GI can lid sailing down the squad bay like a crazed Frisbee will certainly get the attention of any recruit. I know from personal experience.

PA, couldn't have been Chesty. As a "mustang" officer, he did expeience life on the island as a boot in 1917. Finished OTC and a was second lieutenant, but after going into the reserves the Corps classified him back down to corporal. Got recommissioned in 1924 and did some fighting in Haiti and Nicaragua, then spent some time in China training Chinese marines. By the outbreak of WWII he was a major and spent the bulk of the war in the Pacific. Reached General rank in Korea.

For anyone interested, Wikipedia has a fair write up on him:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chesty_Puller

Been a long time since I read it, but I found the book linked below to be an interesting read on his life. Found out he actually had a tough time getting into the Corps due to asthma. He really was a real life bull dog, full of determination and the fighting spirit.
