I am an old dog trying to learn new tricks. One thing I would like to do is learn how to SCUBA dive. I am based in Tallahassee, and it is winter isn't it?

Any ideas? or suggestions? I guess I need to find a class or something.

There are two dive shops in Tally. Both offer courses and can get you certified.

After the temperature dropped today, it seems like I better wait until later. Surely there aren't enough beginners to have a class in a heated pool at this time of year, is there? I think I'll wait until summer, if the fish give me time off!

The guys that Tom and I work with are great, I just finished their class, and will be doing the first of my checkout dives this weekend. One of them (my boss) does certifications through Coral Reef, and the other (the one who instructed my class) teaches through the YMCA, along with another instructor.

The YMCA class takes about 2-3 weeks, consisting of evening classes a few nights a week, plus 1 pool session/lecture each weekend. They will be doing a new class each month, limiting the class size to around 8 students, with 4 students per instructor. They provide all the equipment except the following, which you will need to buy (this goes for anywhere you'll get certified): mask, fins, snorkel, weight belt w/ weights, and booties (neoprene socks, basically).

The cost of the class is $180 + $12 for the certification card, and it covers all the fees except whatever you might incur on your checkout dives. There are four checkout dives required for certification, usually done two per day over two days.

I trained under YMCA standards, and Sean Petronis was involved in the training. He's cool. I hope we can all go on a dive sometime.

One thing I want is some specific spearfishing training or a good book or article on it. There are some really good forums out there on SCUBA. Scubaboard.com is one. http://www.scubaboard.com/
