Got up at dark thirty this am. Wanted to beat the rains. Not real bright idea. We got out there and rain was all around us and eventually found us. 3 hours later we are soaked to the bone with one keeper red. We headed back in and grabbed some rain jackets for warmth, we were already soaked and it was dang sure chilly on that water this mornin. So we mill around a bit , talked about leaving, we are not great fishermen or duck hunters, but we ain't skeered. We head back out and wait for the tide to change. Once it did, it was on. We caught 9 more reds in the next 90 minutes. I was the ray magnet as I had two of those aggravating things on, once I was sure that was what I had I broke off - my nephew was catching reds! Of course, like Wed, the sharks finally show up. Only this time, we were ready. We put down the red rods and grabbed some stouter tackle. I floated a couple of pinfish under a cork. Within a minute - ZING. Set the hook and I tell my nephew that it ain't a real big shark. It wasn't, but it was a nice red. I was able to get him in quick.
So we switch up and go with bottom rigs and a short time later I hook into a nice shark. He makes his first run, I gain ground, then he makes his second even longer. Not sure exactly what happened, but my line sounded like a 22 when it snapped - musta caught something on the real. dee dee dee. I saw his tail when he snapped the line, he knew he was hooked with this rig. It was a big un.
One mullet left and it finds its mark in a a short time as well. I think it was a ray, but it finally crossed the oyster bar and I got to reel in a frayed line. Still gave them a little to remember us by anyways.
We had a manatee around us much of the early afternoon and saw a stout bear on the ride back to Quincy. A real fun day with my nephew.
