I'm headed down to SGI for a few days with some friends. I have never been to that area before. Can anybody shed some light on the situation for me?

Lots of fishing opportunities- back side of state park for reds and trout.
Surf for whiting and maybe still a few pomps.
Cut is great if you have a boat.
East end can be a blast too...
use the search feature and you will find tons of old reports for SGI

If you have time, I would recommend renting a kayak and launching at the Youth Camp ramp. It is about 1/4 mile inside the park from the gate on your left. Once you launch fish the West and South sides of the little bayou where the ramp is with topwater and Cajun Thunder / Gulp 3" Shrimp combos. I've caught a lot in there, and it is normally somewhat sheltered from the wind.
You can fish the beach side too, but you will normally catch catfish, whiting and a few pompano.
Good Luck -

There was a ton of Macks down there this past weekend. Don't know when your going but I would look for the birds and you will find the Spaniards. We saw several groups of birds diving on feeding frenzys of Macks Saturday. Good Luck.
