another post looking for offshore info......on my last trip, we spent about an hour each morning catching pin fish , like a lot of others we were catching the bait just south of the pass along dog island......but what is some other ways to catch "bait".....

we were tossing sabiki rigs tipped with squid or a small bream hook ...I hear some talking about going "out" to bouys or other places such as some flat south of dog island...what do you do???? just drop a sabiki down in the open water and jig it ???? when you see the bait pushed to the top, do you try and catch bait there also???? toss a sabiki into the frenzy?????

dont really want to get into the trap thing, but I do want to make sure that getting bait isnt that much of an issue......

We run out to soft bottom @40-50 ft and fish with squid for perch/squirrelfish. Seems like it has always worked. 6 oz weight and a double hook. You will double up many times.

My last trip with BBG I tied my own "Sabiki" with two #6 Bream hooks and a 1oz weight at the bottom.
We baited it with small pieces of old gulp.

I outfished BBG at least 10 to 1 on bait :-D

Fixed it for you, Bman. :-D

Corrected again.... salute3
bman wrote:I outfished BBG at least 10 to 1 on bait while he was out of commission because of inferior tackle and poor planning. He whined a lot while retying a new sabiki on, whereupon he might have caught up with me on Pinfish. Only to have his hopes dashed as I out fished him on Cobia... :smt110

Some way to treat the Captain who was generous enough to take you to his secret spot and put you on fish. I tell you, folks nowadays... :smt009

Anway, Slayer, sabiki or small hooks baited with tiny pieces of old gulp work great as Bman said. Been using the same technique for years and if the baitfish are around it fills up the tank everytime.

KyFred are you fishing in the Sea of Cortez or off Costa Rica? Haven't heard of roosterfish moving into the Gulf, but if they have I'm going after 'em :D

I think he is talking about those little squirrel fish.
We couldn't be so lucky to get roosters.

Silverking - Rooster changed to squirrel. Although I'd rather be chasing the bigguns
