Everyone has a box or jar of screws at the house. But how do you tell if one of them is stainless or not? Here is the trick hold the screw up to a magnet, if it sticks it is NOT stainless. If it doesn't stick it is.

Kind of like clean or dirty underwear.
Throw them against the wall.
If they stick they are dirty.

I DO NOT THINK THIS IS CORRECT, I HAVE A SMALL BOX OF STAINLESS SCREWS AND THEY SURE STICK TO A MAGNET AS WELL AS GALVANIZED. I BOUGHT THESE SCREWS 2 YRS AGO AT FREIGHT HARBOR TOOLS ON 27 SOUTH FROM THE CAPITAL.

That Harbor Freight hardware must have some Chinese tin or lead mixed in, 'cause magnets will not pick up good stainless. I just tried it again to verify.

Well the engineer in me just can't let this one go by. The truth is that there are many different grades of stainless steel. To qualify as "stainless" steel the alloy (mixture of metals) must contain at least 10% (actually 10.5%) chromium. Common stainless steel is the 300-series SS (304, 316, etc). It contains a high portion of nickle, which makes it non-magnetic. Another good quality stainless steel is the 400-series SS, which has a higher component of iron, and is thus somewhat magnetic. So, Pa and Silverking are each correct, they just have different stainless alloys.

Does that mean it's perfectly clear or semi-clear? There are different levels of clarified. There is the perfectly clear, the almost clear, the dang near-clear, or is it just partly clear. Maybe we can have one of our English majors clarify clarified.
