OH deer season 2010

Katie and I made a trip north for the holidays leaving the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. Initial destination was to see her family in Detroit then to my family in Columbus. Enjoyed great holidays, time and food with both families.
The Monday after Thanksgiving brings gun season in OH, and I've been there every year since I was about 10.
This year brought a bluebird Monday with low winds, an inch or two of rain on Tuesday followed by light snows on Wednesday-Friday. Even though the conditions changed, it was really a moderate and very comfortable season. We usually see extreme cold, winds or rain for my tolernances. My dad took a nice 8 pt with a bow the week before I arrived.
Monday brought me some very late rut activity with a nice 7 chasing a doe. It was a reminder of the excitement rutting activity creates, but that I frequently miss by hunting gun season instead of bow. Bow hunting is creating quite an itch right now.
sorry for the bit of blood...didn't realize it was happening in the moment.
Always a week I look forward to and a great time with my family, ecspecially the hunting with my dad. I hope to get him on a southern duck trip before season ends.

SB, I've only made it there once this year, but I hope to get back for the later phases as more birds start flying around. I'll let you know.
Atticus, good running into you yesterday. Is Allison game for a venison dinner? We could do chili or steaks.
BMan, that hat has taken doves, ducks and deer this fall; when are going to take me a hog trip

Nice work Brian!

My brother killed this 8 point on the property Thanksgiving day. When they cleaned it, they found that it had what appeared to be part of a crossbow bolt deep in its chest

Until I saw this post, I completely forgot to tell you about it.

Brian - tell us about your slug gun setup. I have an old 1187 I am thinking of converting into a slug gun with a cantilever barrel and a cheap optic

That is a nice deer Benji. Congrats to you brother on taking what grew into a man-sized deer. why don't you come up hear and go fishing with me some day....
Luke, my dad and I shoot very similar set-ups. They are cheap Mossberg pump-guns, his a 12 mine a 20. His is a smooth bore and mine rifled. He shoots the old lead Remington Sluggers while I shoot the 2 3/4 sabot premiers. I tried the three inchers but they spray the light copper slugs. Last year was the first year my gun had a scope, a Nikon ProStaff. Prior to that I used the rifled sights. My dad actually has raised mounts on his so you can shoot open sights or use the scope. Either one of these guns is effective, with a ton of shock, up to 110-120 yards. We have some pretty guns, but these guns see rough weather and cover and were purchased to be functional.
Your 1187 will make a fine slug gun; 870s have probably killed more OH deer than any other gun made. If you want to use it solely for slugs, then I would simply put a scope on it. If you want to use it for other purposes, then forget a scope and just get a rifled barrel with sights, you can change barrels as necessary. I have shot some deer with a normal shotgun bead, but it reduces range and confidence.
