Truly a Life Saving Hand

An exhausted Marty Cawvey saved his fellow worker by holding onto his jacket until BPS officers arrived to help pull him out. R.W. McDowell had fallen into a Bainbridge City Sewage tank.

On December 3 at about 7 am, R.W. McDowell slipped on an ice covered lid and fell into a sewage treatment tank. Marty Cawvey was working on the other side but saw water spray up into the air. He went to the other side and checked on McDowell and got there just in time to see him surface.

Cawvey grabbed R.W. by his jacket and held on to him as tightly as he could. He reached into his pocket for his cell phone and called E-911. He continued to hold McDowell until BPS Sgt David Cutchin and Officer Humberto Dean arrived a few minute later and help pull him out.

Marty Cawvey stated that he was exhausted when officers arrived, and without his cell phone in his pocket, the accident might have been a tragedy.

Goodness gracious, could you imagine having to write the obituary if he hadn't saved him!

The same thing happened a few years ago in Dothan at one of the sewage treatment plants but no one was around to pull him out and he drowned... That's got to be a terrible way to go. At least for this guy, he fell in and came out smelling like a rose...or a little worse. ;-)
