1 HP Single Phase Elec. Motor Wanted...

Post by Steve Stinson »

I need a 110 volt electric motor around 1 hp if anyone has one laying around in their shed. I currently have a 1/2 hp single phase motor on my wood lathe and it is heating up too easily under load.

Please post here or call 850 509-3116 if you have one you would be willing to part with. Thanks in advance for any help.

What is the RPM on the current motor?

Current rpms listed in the manual that came with the lathe say 1725, but there are different sized wheels on both the motor shaft and the lathe spindle, so I can adjust the speed of the wood I am turning from 480 to 4023 rpms. (Six different selections between the lowest and max speed).

For those of you who know more about electric motors than myself, let me just post all of the specs for the current motor listed in the manual that came with the lathe -

Type - Capacitor Start
Horsepower - 1/2
Voltage - 110V
Phase - Single
Amps - 6A
Speed - 1725 rpm
Cycle - 60 hz
Number of speeds - 1
Power Transfer - Belt Drive
Breaker - 15 amp
Plug - 5/15
Bearings - Shielded and Lubricated

I have welded together a lathe table from angle iron that I had left after my trailer project, so if the new motor is not the same diameter or mount size it won't matter. If necessary, I will construct a new mount plate / tension assembly beneath the lathe and buy a longer belt to reach the spindle pulleys.

Thanks - Steve

I've got one too Steve. Took it off a small grain sweeper several years ago to upgrade. I will check it out and if it still works, you are welcome to it. I will holler at you tomorrow.

Turning topwater lures...lots of lures. I am not sure why mine is heating up, but even with a small piece of wood on there I can just let it run and it will heat up enough to slow down. I would like to try turning some bowls or other items, but I am pretty much stuck until I solve the overheating issue. The plugs I've made are turned out of of red cedar, which is supposed to be a pretty soft wood.

Reelcatch or Flint River - Thanks for your help, and call me in Tally at 509-3116 when you get a chance.

More than likely you have a bearing issue not a power issue. But like I said this 2hp wont slow down.

Thanks for all the help. I met up with Reelcatch this evening, picked up the motor and swapped a few fishing stories.
