Firing Range Concerns?

So I visited the public firing range in the forest for the first time yesterday to sight in a scope...
It ended up being fairly crowded, and I was very surprised by the disregard for the posted rules. There were shotguns, rapid fire, etc. Worst of all, it seems like the general public doesn't adhere to a the policy that a "cold" range means you don't handle weapons, not even to make adjustments to sites, scopes, etc.
As the sun started to set, the crowd got a little younger. After a sawed off shotgun showed up, I decided that I had had enough and I headed off.
Has anyone else had a similar experience out there? Maybe I am being overly cautious, but in a situation like that one mistake could have dire consequences.

I have seen far more shot by empty guns in foolish hands than those shot on purpose. They just want to get thier guns off and safety isn't on the agenda.

Public Firing Range? New to me, but i'm not in your area. I've spent many years as a Range Safety Officer/ Range Master. It is a strange idea that there is a "Public" range open somewhere with no saftey officer. Unless this is just a spot in the woods everyone goes to shoot. Thinking about all the idiots I've dealt with over the years at ranges makes me cringe to think there is nobody there in charge of safety. That's almost as scary as hunting in the WMA on opening day. I'd run away as fast as I could. Especially when the illigal stuff started showing up. I belong to the Sportsman's Club in Albany. Our range is ran just as strict as any Military or Law Enforcement range I've ever been on. Thank goodness for that.

That place can be a nightmare--- Ive seen thugs with full autos.
Stay away during Christmas. All the Nubes go there with their new guns.
I go early in the am if I go at all.
That is why I'm excited about this place-

I had the same experience there each time I went. Don't go anymore, they scared me to the water.
