ALBANY, Ga. (AP) - A federal agency is offering a $12,500 reward for information about the illegal shootings of three endangered whooping cranes in southwest Georgia.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced the reward Wednesday in hopes of generating tips leading to an arrest and prosecution of whoever killed the migratory birds.
The cranes were found dead Dec. 30 by hunters in Calhoun County west of Albany. Authorities say necropsies on the whooping cranes determined all three been shot.
The cranes were released in late 2010 in Wisconsin as part of a program to reintroduce the birds to the eastern United States.
It's estimated there are only about 570 whooping cranes remaining worldwide.

I'd guess someone mistook them for Sandhill Cranes. I live in Baker County about 18 miles from Elmodel and I have over 100 Sandhills that visit me every winter now. Very cool birds. I understand they have a hunting season for them in TX. They would make an easy target but I leave these alone as I enjoy seeing and hearing them every year.

Why would anyone pay to go to TX to shoot a limit of sandhill cranes? Can you eat em? Do they taste as good as pelican? Can I have it mounted and put it in my den next to my stuffed armadillo? Or would it look better next to my possum?

You can eat them.
EDIT - you can eat the Sandhills not the endangered Whooping Cranes. Whoever shot the endangered cranes is in deep 'yogurt.' Its not funny and he is going to do time.

Some idiots will shoot at anything that moves. Makes them feel real macho I guess.
Most are trying to make up for other shortcomings I assume.
It's a shame.

To learn more on the cranes stop at the visitor center at St. Marks. They had a good video on the crane project.

The sandhill is known as the ribeye of the sky. I went to Texas a couple of years back and wanted to add a crane hunt only to find out that you have to request a free permit from the fed and have it mailed to you. There are hundreds in the area, but because of the whooping cranes, we will not get an open season anytime soon.
