St. Marks Reds

I am a college student at FSU. I have a boat up here and have fished all around the st. marks river about a dozen times so far. I have had trouble finding these fish, and was wondering if anyone would be interested for coming out on a fun day on the water and showing me how to fish these waters. I am not trying to steal your spots for tournaments, just simply looking for the fish. A great time is guaranteed, and i will take care of the gas, booze, and any other necessities. Let me know if you are interested.

Welcome , i would take you up on the offer, but i couldn't catch a red myself few days ago. The booze should get many takers.

Most of us are having a hard time finding the reds. I can point you towards some trout though if you are looking to tug on something, might get lucky and stumble upon a red or two.

It can be tough around here. I've been fishing these water since college myself and at times I just don't find reds during the day... Sunset is my main time to go. Pick an oyster bar close to the channel and soak some live pins or mullet at sunset. Look for bars close to deep water and bends in the river. During the day I would go east of the lighthouse as the weather warms. There are numerous creeks and all can be productive, but as anyone will tell you GO SLOW, many many rocks to bump into.

What type boat you got?

i have a pathfinder 17t. im sure you have seen me out there before. I went out east of the lighthouse on sat. for a few hours, and it was a dead zone out there. Didnt even see a fish spook from the boat.

That's a great offer. I'd take you up this weekend, but already have plans to fish alligator point. The warmer temps may have them moving out of the rivers and around the bars and maybe the flats. I would try the bars in the mouth of the river once the water is moving. Also try stony bayou, a good creek. You can fish the mouth then move into the creek and fish the bends( deepest part). The rock garden is another good spot, but be careful. Lots of rocks, go figure. Look for mullet and fish in the schools. Reds follow mullet and eat the stuff they stir up when they are foraging on he bottom. Good luck.

If youre not using a Diawa Procaster, you may as well stay home. LOL jk but for real, no one knows where the reds are right now (well i dont) are you getting skunked or just no reds???

i went out sat. and sun. and caught 2 reds each day, but they were all small (1 keeper 22"). I caught all of them along oyster bars similar to what rainman was talking about.

I hope to have a good report for you. Ps you did better than most last weekend. Tough fishing. There was a nfgfc tourney last weekend and about 15 out of 23 boats didn't weigh fish. We fished from 7:30 -2:00 and only managed 3 lower slot reds, 2 nice trout and a good flattie.

We fish 1 tournamnet each month not expensive at all and you have plenty of folks to listen and learn from, next tournament is march 12th at keaton beach great time and great learning for anyone wanting to start fishing the coast from keaton Beach to port st Joe.......
