Long, long, long way from the lighthouse. 7-8 miles from the mouth of the Econfina. Rocks, rocks, rocks.

A heck of a lot longer than I would want to run and through some stuff you don't want to see at a low tide.

I have camped there a couple times, both times during the winter so no sand gnats. Was Ok, but if I get the urge to camp now I just camp at Rocky's on 98 where the road breaks off to go to Finholloway, Last time I camped on rock island it took three trips just to get the beer there not including the tent and firewood..

, all kidding aside, Rocky's has a really nice bath house to take a shower before bed so thats why I started staying there, I love the salt but hate to sleep in it. Another plus about Rocky's is if it gets really cold as it does when I like to camp, just carry a portable electric heater and throw it in the tent and you will stay toasty all night. The only problem I had with camping at Rock Island for the most part is figuring out how to anchor the boat without grounding it overnight. I ended up taking my waders and pushing the boat out about 30 yards on the north side and throwing the anchor to hold it away from the island and secured it to the island with my long anchor rope tied to a rock.

Camping on Rock Island requires a permit. Supposedly, the permits are only issued as part of the "canoe trail".
