The family headed to SGI late Wednesday for some Spring Break time. We hit the beach Thursday and then I hit the water Friday afternoon. I caught a nice 26 inch Red down by Little St. George and one little trout. The bite was awfully slow. We headed out Saturday morning, but the fog was terrible, it was somewhat cold, and the wind was pretty strong. We decided to head back to the beach house, pack up, and head back to Crawfordville. After packing and starting our drive back, the girls said they wanted to try fishing again (it was 4 pm and the sun had peaked out), so we launched the boat again and gave it a try for a couple of hours, but we didn't have any luck. After burgers and beer at the Blue Parrot, we went back to the beach house, unpacked again, and spent the night. Today we decided to try the east end for Spanish and we had a blast. It was somewhat choppy, but we caught over 30 spanish in a little over 2 hours. It was definitely a nice ending to our few days over there. I'm glad the girls talked me into staying one more night.....

What kind of rig is that in the second picture? I've never seen something like that before. ?

That is a Spanish rig "aka christmas tree", just ask for em at any bait & tackle that sells salt fishing gear

Wevans is correct, that is a Spanish Rig. That particular one came from the bait shop beside the NAPA in East Point. It was a 3-hook rig and it came with a spoon. It cost $4.25. You can get them in different sizes and with different numbers of hooks. I like the 3 or 4 hook set and I always put a spoon on the end (if it didn't come with one).

I was "cleaning out" my tacklebox yesterday and put on an old Christmas Tree Rig that I had in there for the last few years (it was a 6 hook kind, with smaller hooks). My oldest daughter ended up with 5 spanish on at one time with that rig, talking about fun........ Needless to say, "mean old daddy" ended up having to tell the girls we weren't keeping everything we caught.....

I am headed to St. George in several weeks and want to take the kids trolling for Spanish as well. They are young and get bored with casting and i thought some trolling might be a good way to go. We are renting a house on the bay for a week not too far from the cut in plantation and will be striking out from there. Any advice on where to go off of St. George in that area to troll for spanish? I am familiar with the area but this is the first time we are taking our boat with us. I have only fished at Bob Sikes cut a few times and no where else..

GaWhaler: The east end (down near the State Park) on the bay side is what's hot right now. By the time you get there, that may have changed. I've caught Spanish several times just outside the cut by following the birds. If you go to the east end, I would trailer my boat down to the State Park and put in at the second boat ramp, it will make the boat ride a heckuva lot shorter and limit problems associated with bad weather showing up and you having to make the run from one end of the island to the other end.
Stop by one of the bait shops and they can tell you where the bite has been heavy. I like to stop at Fisherman's Choice in Eastpoint (near the Napa store) to get tackle, etc. They are good, local folks that have good prices and are nice to deal with I also use the two bait shops on the island as well to buy tackle, especially if I am going in there asking them where the bite is, it's only right to pick up a lure or two (at least that's the excuse I tell my wife ).
