I found there was some water in the gear case oil when I was changing the oil the other day. It's a 97 Mercury 9.9hp. Do I need to have it checked asap? Any place to recommend? (I am in Tallahassee) How much is the estimate around? I do appreciate any advice/comments.

YA NEED TO REPLACE THE PROP SHAFT SEALS, NOT THAT BAD OF A JOB.

Pa is right on the repair needed. Normally, that is caused by fishing line wrapping around the prop shaft beneath the propeller, so pull that out while you're in there. Also, when you fill the foot back up with oil, it is better to force it into the bottom hole, until if fills and runs out the top one. Trying to fill it the other way around is near impossible, because it air-locks before it gets full.

could be prop shaft seals or drive shaft seals. both pretty easy to replace. first thing i'd do though is replace the washers around the plugs and then check it again. a lot of times that is all it is.

Depends on how much water. There can be a small amount of condensation buildup over time. That size motor should only be a teaspoon or less.
