Took wife to Keaton yesterday for a little getaway. Got there about 1230 and it looked like Fisherman's Wharf at the landing, unbelievable at the boats, but hey, it was Saturday on a holiday weekend. Neva got a front-row parking space, talk about luck. Got out to the end of channel at the last marker and started fishing the patchy bottom. While trying to catch bait I got a huge hit, hooked and followed with the boat a 2 lb. Spanish.
Got him in and kept fishing but only managed a few sharks and a sailcat. Couldn't catch any pins small enough, threw shinertails on the few big pins we caught. It was rough out there, brisk NW wind. We moved further South near Keaton bird rack and found a few small trout, one keeper trout, and blue-zillion sharks.
Kept another shark for the cooler, I have never seen them that thick before. But with shinertails and live bait that will happen. Water was very clear with grassy bottom, tide falling fast. Decided about 4 pm to move further out in 6 ft. , found some patchy bottom and managed 2 more keeper trout and 2 keeper black bass. that spot was good for a while, there were trout, bass, ladyfish, lizardfish, just about everything. We did best on white gulp fished straight. When it played out we headed in about 5:20 trying to beat the mad rush to get loaded up and to beat the falling tide. It was a fun 4 hr. trip, got enough for a good fish supper.
