Well today was the day to make a run at some snapper. Our boat is docked at st marks so to get red snapper...its a long run....a really long run. Gassed up dropping 160$ at the pump and pulled away from shell island fish camp at 0715 with myself, wife kylie, herb, and jim as the crew. We scooted to the flats on flat calm water and new we had a good chance of making the 35 mile run to the red dragons. After loading the well we pointed her south and put her on cruise at about 25mph...you do the math... and hour and twenty freaking minutes later we finalee pull up to the spot in 65ft. Soon as we zero in on the swiss cheese live bottom hole the depth finder explodes with nasty waads of snapper and grouper. First bait down and jim is crushed by a 7lb Red snapper. Next bait down he gets a 26" gag that goes back...dont ya lover our new regs. Next bait down jims on with a 24" red grouepr...might i add i havnt even got my rod down from the t top cause im busy boxin jims fish..lol...5 mins later herb gets smashed and catches his first ever Red Snapper and a good one at about 8lbs. Next kylie gets in on the action with an 8lb snapper herslef. Finalee i get a chance to get a bait down to the bottom about 10 secs later get crushed and pull in my seccond biggest ever red snapper at 12lbs. Drifted through a few more time catching one here and there. Fished anothe # 1 mile away and lost a snapper, got crushed by something big but missed it and jim lost a 40" King at the side of the boat a bucktail
. Ended up getting one more keeper red grouper before we headed in. It was flat calm all day but once we got within 15 miles it went from 1ft to 2-3 fters and once we got on the other side of och shoal its like a dam bomb went off...it was solid 4fters with some 5s thrown in. For the first time since weve owned my dads boat in 10 years we speared a wave..and a beast at that...it was between 6 and 7 ft and dumped about 40 gallons in the cockpit..thank goodness for bilge pumps and scuffers..other than the beating we took on the ride back in..it was and aweosme day and cant wait to do it again!!
Final Tally:
5 Red Grouper to 8lbs
4 Red Snapper to 12lbs
lots of grunts and seabass
