We are all starting to get a litmle concerned about the drought here in South GA. The river is lower than I have seen it in 20 years. I have two friends with dry wells and one of my favorite ponds is dried up with no real rain in sight. A farmer friend of mine told me last night that cotton prices are about to soar because most of the cotton in this area is dried up unless irrigated and he said it is almost too late to replant because the frost will kill it. I certainly hope we get a tropical depression forming in the Gulf soon.

WITH ALL THE FLOODING IN THE CORN BELT, STORMS IN THE SOUTHEAST, AND DROUTH IN THE SOUTH, YA CAN LOOK FOR AN INCREASE IN NEARLY ALL FOOD PRODUCTS THAT ARE MADE FROM GRAIN, THE COOP. IS ESTIMATING AN INCREASE OF APPROXIMATELY 25 PERCENT IN ALLL OF THESE PRODUCTS. WITH THE COST OF FERTILIZER AND SPRAY PRODUCTS THE FARMERS OVER THE ENTIRE NATION ARE IN FOR A BIG LOSS THIS YEAR. I AM GLAD ALL I HAVE IS SOD AND I CAN LET IT TURN BROWN AND JUST LAY THERE, I CAN FERT. AND SPRAY AGAIN IF THE DEMAND RETURNS FOR SOD. I HAVE NOT SOLD A CAR LOAD OF SOD SINCE 2010, KINDA CUTS DOWN ON MY LIFESTYLE A BIT.

I hear ya Pa, rough times for sure. I think I would rather take my chances with sod like you. Corn requires so much water that with the price of fuel I can't see a whole lot of profit after paying to run the pivots.

We just cut our first hay field of the year here in North FL about a month later than last year, and got about half of what we'd normally get on the first cut. We've been tempted to put in an irrigation system (center pivot) for years but have avoided it as we were afraid it would take years and years for it to pay for itself. I think it would have been worth it this year.

We've gotten a couple of showers in the last 2 weeks, maybe it's looking up. Last year, when it did finally start raining, it rained so much we couldn't get 3 dry days to bail the hay.

I expect to hear about more wells going dry if we don't some rain soon. The only thing keeping my garen going is the water I'm dumping on it.
