I have thoughts, some are about this reel.

I believe production moved away from japan on this reel.

There any advantage over a Calcutta? Same price range, different profile.

I have two of them. Been very good reels for me..

If I wanted a bullet point feature comparison I would have done it myself on their website. The majority of this mean absolutely nothing, yes they both have decent components with fancy marketing names.

What I meant from someone who has used both, why get it over a Calcutta, which is pretty proven in salt.

Does it have a lot of parts, is there a lot of plastic, how does it cast, does it hold up to salt and a beating? etc etc

Very few plastic parts, but the old greenie Curado's that are worth a mint had tons of plastic. That's why they held up well to salt water, less corrosion.

It casts like a $299.00 reel but sells for $199.00. The only reel above this in the low profile line up is a $350.00 Core, yes, it casts well.

Let's see, aluminum and graphite. Yep they hold up very well in salt water.


The E series Chronarch are basically super tuned Curados but with a better (lighter) spool and a few more tricks. The spool & handle are double anodized as well.


If you like the round bait casters then stick with it but you will not find a better reel at this price point. I didn't even know people still used Calcuttas anymore.

Cool, well honestly the only reason I use the Calcutta is cause I like the round bait casters.

Then you probably won't like the low profile bait casters.

One of my friends bought 6 calcutta a few month ago to replace some older ones, he loves them ! Me I use to love the Abu Garcia 5500 then the 5600 with the higher gear. I would buy them three at a time and could get part and repair them myself pretty darn easy.Once I started using the low profile, less weight reels I put the Abu on the shelf and bought 2 Citica and one Quantam PT w/ a 7 something to 1 ratio.I'll never go back to the round reels for reds and trout. BTW I have no input on the Shimano Chronarch 200E7 .
