I am looking at a boat with a Yamaha 60hp motor, a 2000 model. It is very clean with one exception; around the head gaskets there is some corrosion. Not a lot, just on the gasket. Could this be a sign of it not being flushed out with fresh water?
gonna water test it tomorrow.

IT IS A SURE SIGN IT HAS NOT BEEN FLUSHED WITH FRESH WATER, MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE CORROSION IS THE COMPRESSION ON EACH CYLINDER, THEY SHOULD BE ABOUT 130 POUNDS OR BETTER DEPENDING ON HOW MANY HOURS THE ENGINE HAS BEEN RUN. IF THERE IS OVER 5 POUNDS DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE CYLINDERS I WOULD LOOK SOMEWHERE ELSE FOR A BOAT AND KICKER. I HAVE A V-4 EVINRUDE THAT HAS ABOUT 2,500 HOURS ON IT, ALWAYS RUN THE ENGINE IN FRESH LAKE OR POND AFTER GOING IN SALT WATER WITH IT. WHEN I GET IT HOME I PULL THE HOOD AND SPRAY W-D 40 OVER THE ENTIRE ENGINE. THIS IS A 1985 ENGINE AND THE COMPRESSION ALL OF THE CYLINDERS IS THE SAME 125 POUNDS. IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A COMPRESSION KIT YOU CAN GET THEM AT HARBOR FREIGHT TOOL OVER ON APPLACH. PARKWAY AT A RESONABLE PRICE.

Thanks PA. I wonder if he just failed to wash the motor off like he should, or is that coming from the inside -out?

HARD TO SAY WITHOUT LOOKING AT IT, I WOULD TIGHTEN UP THE HEAD BOLTS JUST TO BE ON THE SAFE SIDE.

It could very well be surface corrosion. If the motor runs it is not likely to be from the inside out. If you decide to tighten the head bolts be sure to use a torque wrench and DO NOT over tighten them. Follow the manufacturer's specification. If you are very concerned about the motor's condition and you are wanting to buy this boat/motor. Take it to a boat mechanic and have them check it out. The $$ you spend will be cheap insurance or it could give you bargaining power.
