How big is the most common ball size for trailer hitches? I want to put one on my jeep b/c some family members gave me a hitch ball cover to put on my jeep, I had been wanting to have a ball back there just in case I had to tow anything, now I am confused as to which size would be appropriate. I don't tow anything as of yet, I just wanted to know in case I had to tow something, what would be the most common size????
All I have back there is the receiver, and the tounge thinggy, I need a bolt to hold that toung thinggy in place and a ball. What size would be the most usefull?

I have the one like wevans posted because my Jon boat uses 1 7/8 and the key west is a 2. If you had to get just one, get the 2.

I tote all three, never know what I might find that needs towing...
1 7/8 - just in case
2 - Plastic boat (Logic) & Smoker
2 5/16 - Dad's boat

Atticus,
Don't know if your planning on using a bumper provided hole or having a bar installed but just a word of caution, if you are planning on using the bumper. Setting aside any issues of load capacitiy... just having the ball located a small distance further from the bumper gives you more clearance when turning in a tight radius. In other words it keeps the trailer hitch from contacting the bumper or gouging when turning hard.

(my .02)

I know it may be tempting for a LS to just use the bumper(avoiding the extra cost) so just wanted you to know about my experiences with the turning issue.

Here is what I have, take it easy on me SR because I used to live in NY and NJ...

I guess this shows some ignorance but I don't know what "using the bumper" means

Ya done good Atticus
but I don't know what "using the bumper" means
Some folks call em "step bumpers" it's where the hole for the ball is manufactured into the bumper its self.
