Sheephead lesions

I took my father in law fishing today. Put in at lanark at safe light. Ok day, nothing to write home about. 4 keeper reds, 2 nice spaniards, plenty of big bluefish. Reds on shrimp, blues macs and ladies on spooks. I also caught a 5# sheephead on a shrimp. This fish had large ulcers/lesions on his face and gillplates. A little on the body also. I wasn't sure if I should keep it or not, but figured best to remove it either way. I can almost put pics up, but not quite there. Jhults will post pics for me. Anyone have any idea what this is and weather or not it is safe to eat. Thanks a bunch

I'm 95% sure there is no hazard with such a lesion.

just filet it and cook it real good. Praying before every meal is a good habit anyway. :-)

Is there a nuclear power plant discharge around Lanark? Burn that thing then bury it!

Burn it. I suspect a fungus, but I admit I did not sit in any fish medicine lectures.

I suspect he ate the bait just so you would put him out of his misery. Wow!

I have caught a lot of messed up fish (19 lb snook in the keys with a big growth on his mouth, a red missing much of his back end, and a several reds with lesions) but that tops all of them.

I would go catch one that looks better for eating. :lick:
