Green Cove Springs DAY shrimping: Wed 10/12 11

After the kids left for school I trailered my jon boat Tangent and hit the Shands Pier ramp at 8:30 a.m. Three and a half hours of throwing netted only 2 gallons of mixed shrimp (mostly large mixed with a few mediums). Toughest day shrimping I’ve had all season. Only four boats out when I started; all by the pier on the west side-none on the east side. By the time I left at noon there were only five boats shrimping.

Next to the pier I started in 12 feet – first throw was 15 larges and I thought this looks promising but was hit n’ miss after that. Threw a lot of zero’s (no shrimp) trying to find where they were. Worked around looking for them up to 21 feet. No one was hitting em. I recognized a couple of shrimp regulars and they weren’t hitting em either.

After an hour I crossed over to the east side and tried from 26 to 35 feet. I could occasionally get on them but could not find any consistent concentrations. Went south to marker #24 and throwing in the eddy line I was getting only 2 -5 a throw and a fair number of catfish and small trout. A lot of weed in the eddy line too.

Thought I’d do well based on the full moon and a few people I’ve spoken with but they were night shrimping on docks just to the south of Green Cove Springs. Shrimp legs were barely tinged with red on 1/3 of the shrimp. Nice morning on the water though.

Think I'm gonna switch from shrimping to fishing, gigging, and hunting. My favorite time of the year!
Hoo Yah!
