I'm not really looking for a boat, but I found what sounds like a good deal. A good friend of mine asked me if I wanted to buy his 1998 J16 with 1998 electric start Mercury for $2300. It has a front deck with led seat, middle and rear benches with seats. Trolling motor, galvanized trailer and VHF radio. The boat has always been garage kept and motor has around 40 hours on it. I was thinking it would be a great river boat. I'm a little scared of the Mercury. What do you guys think?

Buy it, you'll like it.
Just don't let the plastic boys find out about it, they might disown you.

I will use it to shuttle my plastic boat upstream.

I have had a 90 Saltwater mercury 2 stroke (carb version) on my boat for 7 years. NO problems at all. Just a little tricky to warm up, but easy once you get used to it. I have replaced impeller myself a couple of times. It did not need one either time, but replaced it anyway. It is still running on te SAME plugs that came in it! Got new ones, but it runs so good, never replaced them. Just remove them and inspect and put a drop of oil on the threads each year.

Remember that those boats are as controllable in a turn as a fat kid on a slipNslide.

I have a J-16 with a 30hp nissan 4 stroke. Center console, front deck and rear storage seat.
Its 6 years old and has been serviced at the shop we got it from...
Been thinking about selling it... asking $4600.
Nothing wrong with it... Just using the bay boat more often.
