Trolling the rivers...?

I was talking with a buddy from work and he said he trolls the Ock. River for reds in the winter... Anyone else been doing this? Any tips? What type of lure, he mentioned a stretch 15. I was thinking of trying this in the St. Marks, going from the fort out to the lighthouse maybe, or should I work back up towards the power plant and beyond? Any stories or tips from someone that has tried this would be greatly appreciated.
My dad lives over in Biloxi and he trolls for speckled trout in the winter. Takes the jon boat and runs the trolling motor on low with the direction of the tide. He'll troll live shrimp and does really well...

If you are going to try this in the St. Marks I recommend trolling the Power Plant North rather than towards the light house. You can also take a heavier jig and curly tail grub as well. Need the heavier jig head to keep the lure down deep. Or, just bounce the jig rather than trolling, unless you just like the idea of trolling.

Back in the 1940's my dad took us fishing on the Econf and we trolled a white red head mirrolure. Seems back then they were made of wood? It was cold, hands frozen and when a big red hit the reel handles would spin and eat up my knuckles.
I think it will work.

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to give it a try this weekend. I kind of like the idea of trolling. Last year, in March or April it was crazy, there was a huge school of spanish mackerel in the river. We trolled a crank bait from the fort down to shields and back over to shell island fish camp and we loaded the boat. It was quite the adventure for us.

I troll the "O" a lot. I use X-Raps, Rattle Traps, Rattlin Rouge, and a few others that look as close as possible to the food source. The thing about Trout is to set the drag as loose as possible to keep from ripping their mouths when they hit "if you see your tip bend and release, your tearing the Trouts mouth". This can get to be interesting when the Trout and Reds are in the same area, cause when a Red hits that loose drag, it will make ya move quick to tighten up said drag

Good luck and watch those hangs
