Mexico Beach

My wonderful wife has had a terrible day at work this week and decided she wants to get away for the weekend.

I booked a hotel in Mexico Beach, gonna tow the boat over with us. Never been that far west so I wanted to see if anyone could offer up some advice on what we should target and where?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Personally I love surf fishing there- fun to do with the wife. The Pomps and Whiting should be there.

St Joe Bay is an AMAZING place and the city ramp is a short drive. Clear water great for trout and reds.

Later in the summer trolling right off the beach gets you into spanish and a short run to the bouy line gets you kings.
Also plenty of good bottom not too far from the canal but other guys will have to help you with that.

Thanks for the info Bman, Any suggestions on what the Pomps like for bait? We are sort of new to salt water fishing, oh who am I kidding we bought our boat last year and I have not really salt water fished since the 80's down in Cape Canaveral.

Leave the boat home and call Presnell's and get a guide to take you out on St. Joe Bay.

mexico beach is a great area, very quite and relaxing. won't have to worry about spreak breakers there. once you come out of the canal just troll along the beach about 100 yards off stay between 15 ft and 20ft. ( my best luck in that range) and youll get your limit of spanish in no time and i believe your wife would enjoy that alot. like bman said Port St joe is an awesome spot as well just head towards the island. your options are pretty much endless there. you got offshore and inshore at your finger tips with these two places. hope ya have a safe trip along with some fishing storys when ya return!

From what I hear the Spanish are already in the bay. Trout and reds are showing up scattered on the shallow grass flats in the back of the bay. For pompano try sand fleas or fresh shrimp on the bottom using a pyramid sinker or pomp jig tipped with bait. Look for deeper holes and wash outs in the first sandbar. You might get a nice red or trout this way and will probably get plenty of catfish too. Just don't let the hard head cats fin you. My buddies John and Todd out on the cape at the Cape Trading Post can probably give you a current report on surf fishing off the cape.
