Post by SS-342 »

Anyone using their iPad for a GPS?

Was interesting in buying the Garmin GPSMAP 740 but my son said an iPad would do the same thing plus.

Anyone using their iPad for a maring GPS please respond.

Thanks

Sorry, but I cannot justify taking out an iPad on the water to navigate, mark, and fish.

Yes, there are great apps out there for GPS/Marine Navigation, but you are better off using a product that was built for that sole purpose.

that, and I don't think the capabilities of an iPad could keep up with a unit like the 740

A Garmin is water proof and designed for the marine environmet, the ipad is not!! :smt004

You'll go through a lot of iPads after dunking them to check the depth.

Seriously, I'd also recommend going with a unit designed for the marine environment. You'll be happier in the long run and the unit will last much longer.

I love my 740S, by the way. It does everything I need it to and more.

I have carried my Ipad out on clear days and the Navionics app works great. The biggest problem is being able to see the screen in the sun. I would have to shield myself and the ipad with a towel to be able to view it. In the end, not worth the hassle.

Go with the gps unit. I have EarthNC app on iPhone and iPad. It is a great app to have. Containing NEXRAD radar, google earth and all marine charts. It comes in handy if you were ever to lose electronics...keep the iPad at home to play angry birds...

Wondering this, I opened Goggle maps on my Blackberry and, although I was out of cell range, I was able to mark a structure.
Next time out there, I was able to find it again.
No way I'd give up my Garmin though.
