Picked up a few pieces of "trash" this weekend!!

Post by KyTrkyHntr »

Well, some folks consider these "trash fish", but I think of them as prehistoric & golden goodness on the fly!!

Saturday was a tough day on the water. Since the lake has been down for a long time it's given enough time for the green vegetation to grow and grow everywhere... and now with the lake getting closer to summer pool it's giving the carp plenty of cover and plenty of stuff to munch on. Only had limited shots at them, but found some Gar laid up and suspended. Some of those dudes were as long as my leg, but the little guys kept getting in the way! Here's an example!

The deadly "rope fly" strikes again!

Today (Sunday) was a little better carp day, but mainly ran into laid up fish and some still spawning up in the green stuff!! You have to find pockets of mud where no weeds/grass have grown and that gives you a shot at either mudding fish or fish cruising looking for food. Found one that was hungry....

Tried some shots at fish feeding in the vegetation but would get hung up or land the fly right on top of them and they would spook out!

Way to get after 'em.

But you've got to get some sun on those legs. They're almost as bright as your shoes.

'Trashcan Slam'...I would have to say, Choupique. That's the Cajun Word, I think they called mudfish around here. Be kinda tough on a fly rod I reckon.

Reminds me of the old commercial parody:

KyTrkyHtr, where did you get your rope fly? The Ochlockonee River below the dam is full of gar. That would be a great alternative trip if too windy down at the coast.

Very easy to tie. Just take some nylon rope and untwist it real good or brush it out. Take a large hook and tie some lead wire thread (small jig head should work too) so you can get it down in the water column about 1 or 2 ft then just tie in the rope with thread at the hook eye..... Tie it like a large streamer. 4-5" of "rope" should be good, but you can always go shorter. Then cut the hook off!! :-D The long nose gar have those needle teeth that are "angled in" so they get tangled once they strike the fly. Fish it with quick strips and they will nail it...

Take some needle nose pliers to get all the rope out and the fish are good to go!!! That's the only PITA about catching these fish...... Need to get all the rope out so they survive....

Here's a link where I got some good ideas. This page has a pic of some flies and I'm fishing the ones at the bottom of the pic.

Caught this one on the flats about 6 years ago. Their teeth are like needles
and went right through my glove. :-D
