put it under a glass - the ability to classify a specimen to species level often requires a microscopic inspection of the genitalia.

Wevans, no need for drug testing or genitalia exams (unless you're just into that kind of thing
)... 100% sure it's Araneus bicentenarius, aka giant lichen orb weaver. Wondering how I know it's because had my first at our house this year too and scoured the net until I confirmed with certainty. Green mossy (lichen-like) back and humps give conclusive ID. And picture doesn't do it's bad azzness justice. Those jokers get BIG with hard-shelled abdomens about the size of ping pong balls. Here's a pic of the one at my house.
So big it can fly down its web at a blazing speed but has to slow crawl back up due to it's weight. Pretty cool little video I captured of the same one in the picture climbing back up its web after I fed it a mole-cricket.

Re: Spider ID please
Should have added not a particularly potent spider as far as venom is concerned... BUT... read the description of the species on a pest control site and laughed out loud at what it said...
"The bite of Orb-Weaving Spiders is of low risk (not toxic) to humans. They seldom bite but be careful not to walk into their webs at night - the fright of this spider crawling over one's face can be terrifying and may cause a heart attack, particularly to the susceptible over 40 year olds".
... wait, just remembered I'm past 40 now...

Night hell, the damned thang will make ya hurt yerself in the daytime, if ya walk into the web
and it took 3 dhoots of carb cleaner ta incapacitate this one
the wife and youngun are scared ta death of em "got one on the front porch, one right in front of the outside freezer and this one was right in my walkway through the shop"! I'll probably have ta take out the one in front of the freezer also "unless I want to be the only one using it"
Thanks for the info BBG, and I rekon the rest of y'all also
