Sand Trout in 77 feet

Me and a buddy from work went on an offshore charter about a month ago with Big Bend Charters and caught some sand trout 77 foot deep on cut bait. Has anyone ever heard of this? We talked to some FWC researchers at the dock who said that they had never heard of that. Just wondering if anyone else has seen anything strange like that before or had any idea why they would be out that deep to begin with.

That is crazy... I have a few 20 foot spots that I catch them in but nothing like 70 feet!
We did catch on in 35 foot once off Carrabelle but I thought it was a fluke.

FYI fluke is a flat fish.

I ran into a pod of them by "o" tower last year fishing cut bait.

Like my dad says, "Aren't any fences in the ocean".

You'll see fish in places you never expect.

When we take folks fishing who just want to catch fish we target white trout in a 33' hole and catch big nunbers. I also caught one offshore in 47' a few years ago.

Not unusual at all, except that those depths are not common inshore in the Big Bend. Sand trout prefer sand and mud bottom. They congregate in big numbers in deeper spots such as Pensacola Bay off the old Lexington pier. We used to catch dozens on cut bait, often on tandem rigs, when I lived over there.
